Should You Update Your Firmware?
We also have this information in video format.
What is Firmware? Chances are you've gotten a notification on one of your devices saying "firmware update available" but do you know what you're even updating? Firmware is a type of software that is embedded into hardware devices to control how they function. It's used to run programs on a device. Firmware is found on pretty much everything nowadays. Cars, cameras, mobile devices, smart refrigerators, printers, routers, smart TVs... you get it.
Now there are a few different types of firmware. Low-level, high-level, and subsystems.
Low-level: this firmware is stored in non-volatile items which just means it's memory doesn't require power. This firmware can't be rewritten of updated
High-level: this firmware can be updated and is usually stored within flash memory chips
Subsystems: semi-independent devices that are part of an embedded system. This firmware is the most complex form
It's important to keep firmware updated to make sure your device is performing to the best of its ability. Updates can include fixing bugs, improving security, allowing the device to interact with new forms of media, and generally includes new features that haven't existed before. An example of this would be a motherboard supports new processors, a router is updated to perform better, a new app is supported on your smart fridge, etc.
Most devices that are connected to the internet automatically check for new firmware updates and some even automatically update the firmware for you. If you have to install the firmware update manually, it's important to follow the manufacturers directions to prevent damaging your device.
Keeping firmware updated can help save on future repair/maintenance costs or even save you from a hack. Remember, without firmware, technology is just an expensive plastic paperweight.
