Recap: Cyber QP Fantastic Forum, Texas

Recently I had the opportunity to attend the Fantastic Forum Academy presented by Cyber QP. This event was focused on implementing and operationalizing the Center for Internet Security’s Critical controls.

These controls are designed to be a prescriptive approach to cyber security that any organization can adopt. The positive impacts of these are backed by a whole bunch of data showing their effectiveness in building a defensible security posture.

So, what did we go over?

Well, the morning got started with Phyllis Lee discussing the tangible impact of these controls on organizations. I always enjoy hearing her insights from her perspective at CIS and where the challenges are in our industries. It’s these insights that help us deliver the value of these controls to the organizations we work with.

Later in the morning, I had the opportunity to sit on a panel discussion about some of the challenges we face in the MPS space. I really value these opportunities to share what we’ve learned but also to collaborate with our peers in the industry. I firmly believe that we in the MSP space have so much work to do to keep our clients secure in our modern era. These opportunities to collaborate with our peers are a way we can have a positive impact on our communities.

After lunch, we dove into the meat and potatoes of the event – a CIS workshop presented by my friend Matt Lee. Matt is a fantastic communicator who adds a lot of unique perspectives when building these practices. It was a lot of fun diving into the controls and discussing how these can be operationalized into our security practices. I’m looking forward to taking these perspectives and ideas back into our practices.

Overall, this was an enjoyable event, packed with great content, and focused attendees. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to attend and to share with the community. And lastly, I’m excited to take the ideas discussed back to our clients to help improve their security posture.
