What the Heck is the Cloud?

Hello, I am Kurt, a senior network engineer at Simplex-IT. In this blog, I will be discussing what the cloud is, where the cloud is, and why you should use the cloud.

So, what the heck is the cloud?

In the tech industry, the joke is that the cloud is somebody else’s computer. But to break it down, the cloud is taking the server in your office and migrating it to a resilient data center that you access over a private network or internet.

So where is the cloud?

 ITS EVERYWHERE!

Data servers are located across the world, and Azure, Microsoft’s Cloud Service, for example, has 9 and are currently building the 10th in the United States alone. You can pick the data center that is closest to your primary business and if your business is spread across a geographical location, you might pick multiple data centers or one that is closest to your headquarters. The good news is that you are not tied to that data center as you can replicate your data and how your stuff functions across multiple regions or data centers.

So why should you use the cloud?

You should use the cloud for redundancy and resiliency. For example, do you have a server in your office, and what would happen if your office floods or catches on fire? Do you have redundant internet? What is your backup strategy? How is your company able to survive? If you’re living in the cloud, the cloud natively supports easy replication and backup and is resilient so your data is safe.
